Book review: Defending Rights in China

I recently made a review of Jonathan Benney’s book DEFENDING RIGHTS IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA New York: Routledge, 2013, in the journal Pacific Affairs. The book shows that the rapid diffusion and adoption of the concept of weiquan 维权 (rights defence) in no small part was due to and accompanied with the diffusion and growth of the Internet in China. Despite tight control and censorship, the Internet has opened up a space for Chinese citizens to conceptualize, demand and fight for rights, as well as get support from others.
